ArchiType™

BusinessGraph now optionally ships with our ArchiType metamodel — enabling you to create, persist and query enterprise models that semantically and visually comply with the ArchiMate standards.

ArchiType fully describes the ArchiMate metamodel as defined in the ArchiMate 3.0 specification. The metamodel includes semantics and symbols for element and relationship types across each aspect and layer:

  • Passive
  • Behavior
  • Active
  • Business
  • Application
  • Technology

Semantically Customizable

Sub Types

BusinessGraph's visual metamodeling view lets you extend the ArchiMate core metamodel to suit your organizations needs. Both new element and relationship types can be created in seconds by drag/dropping on creation wizards. Relationship end-type constraints are automatically generated from the wizard definitions and new types inherit attributes from their super-types.

Type Attributes

The standard ArchiMate language contains only the elements and relationships that are necessary for general architecture modeling and organizations will naturally wish to add attributes to enhance the value of their data.

BusinessGraph makes this exceptionally easy: Users with meta modeling rights can add properties to element and relationship types by drag/dropping in BusinessGraph's visual meta modeling view. BusinessGraph enforces strict inheritance so your new attributes need only be defined once to be available on all sub types of the target.

ProTip: other enterprise portfolios apps either don't allow users to make metamodel changes, require a fat client editor, or require xml configuration.

Visually Customizable

ArchiType ships with symbols and icons based on those from the ArchiMate 3.0 specification. However many organizations have preferred representations for types. BusinessGraph makes it simple adopt alternative visuals for element type symbols, icons and relationship type line and endpoint overlays.

Pre- and User-defined ViewPoint Models

ArchiType ships with workset templates that allow ArchiMate compliant models to be quickly created. Each template contains a sub-metamodel containing the types allowable in the view point.

Pre- and User-defined ViewPoint Models

ArchiType ships with workset templates that allow ArchiMate compliant models to be quickly created. Each template contains a sub-metamodel containing the types allowable in the view point.

Users can create new ViewPoint models or duplicate and amend existing templates to support customized semantics or alternative view points.

Pre- and User-defined Queries

Its not just about model creation. BusinessGraph is designed to enable semantically precise queries on very large graph data sets, and to display the results in meaningful ways: navigable visual graphs, live tables.

Each predefined ViewPoint has a number of corresponding queries that run against the persisted data to create views based on selected elements. Such queries are invaluable to users looking for insight into data sets of the tens of thousands of elements that make up a typical enterprise data repository.

As you would expect, users can create or amend existing queries to support their organizations needs.
